Keeping Rats Out in Denver

Denver has become a rat city. The construction boom, the South Platte and Cherry Creek corridors, the downtown alley-and-sewer network, and cold winters that push rats indoors all feed the problem. Most prevention comes down to two things: cut off the easy access, and cut off the easy food. These tips cover the highest-value steps for a Denver home.

Seal the gaps, low and high

Norway rats get in low through foundation cracks, crawl-space vents, and utility penetrations; roof rats get in high along the roofline. A rat needs only a quarter-sized gap, so sealing is what keeps removal from being temporary.

Cut off food and water

Store pet food and birdseed sealed, pick up fallen fruit and pet waste, secure trash and compost, and fix leaks. In Denver, backyard chickens and gardens are common rat draws worth managing.

Clear the harborage

Trim vegetation back from the house, keep firewood and stored items up off the ground, and clear yard debris and clutter where rats nest, especially near alleys and fence lines.

Mind the alley and the creek

Homes near the South Platte, Cherry Creek, the trail corridors, or a busy alley see more rats. Keep your side of the fence clean and sealed, because those corridors are how rats travel.

Act before winter

Cold Front Range winters push rats indoors to nest and breed. A fall sighting is the time to act, before the population settles in for the season behind your walls.

When to Call a Local Exterminator

Prevention helps, but once rats are inside, they need to be removed and the entry points sealed, and that is hard to do completely on your own, especially with wary Norway rats. If you are seeing rats, hearing scratching at night, or finding droppings, it is worth an inspection. Start with removal, pair it with exclusion, and add attic cleanup if they have been nesting overhead. See all services or call 720-379-2570 to describe what you are dealing with.
